Chapter 19

We hurried back home quickly, unwilling to spend a day away without a real automation system set up to feed our blerps. Ross once again charged back to me for more attention, but at least seemed less upset with the time apart. My arms were teeming with the squishy weight of life blerps, since we didn’t have any more transport jars. Ross rolled around my feet, happily squeaking at the life blerps. Thankfully saving them seemed to make them more than happy to come with us.

They bounced and jiggled, their faces etched with emoji-like glee, content in our grasp.

Glessal chatted about setting them up in one of the new [Pens], while Slanna suggested we plant tomatoes to feed the little buggers. I wasn’t sure we had tomato seeds, but maybe Larissa had slipped some in our supplies. If not, I could likely take a short trip over to Talindra’s and ask for enough to get us through to the next market day.

As we crested the final hill on the road home, I spotted a surprise waiting for us. Larissa.

She was in the middle of the ranch, ceaselessly moving, her red hair catching the rays of the setting sun. She had shunned her usual simple dress for a sturdier pair of overalls that could handle the rigors of manual labor. I watched as she wiped sweat from her freckled skin, and I could see where fortitude had drawn out muscles I hadn’t noticed before.

“Is that Larissa?” Glessal asked in an excited tone.

“Looks like it. Wonder what she’s doing.”

I was surprised to see her—no alarm had appeared for me. Must have been because I wasn’t on the ranch when it happened; good to know.

As we got closer I could see she was unloading some crates from a wagon. I couldn’t help but take in her sun-kissed skin and girl-next-door good looks. There was a beauty in her vitality that stood apart from the ethereal charm of Glessal and Slanna. It was real, warm as the Ylege sun, and just as inviting.

“What’s in the crates?” Slanna asked in her usual quiet way that made me strain to hear her.

“I guess we’ll find out soon.” I replied, my gaze still fixed on Larissa.

The blerps in my arms were starting to squirm, their emoji faces changing into curious little squiggles. I laughed and gently tossed them over to Glessal and Slanna.

“Take care of these little buggers for me, all right?”

As Glessal and Slanna went off to oversee their settling in, Ross followed while wibbling to himself happily, Larissa looked up from her work and locked eyes with me.

The world around us seemed to dim for a moment.

A slow grin spread across her face as she straightened up and brushed the back of her hand across her brow. “Hi Blake,” she said, dusting off her hands on her overalls and gesturing in a grand sweeping motion at the crates around her. “I wasn’t expecting you back so soon.”

“Is everything okay?” I replied with a smirk, striding towards her with renewed energy.
